Andy Wilcox - Chair

Meet Andy, our current chair, whose journey to Sanday has been as unique as it is inspiring.

Before finding his home here, Andy dedicated thirteen years to the Royal Navy as a medic. His service wasn’t just confined to the safety of naval bases; he was right in the thick of it, supporting Royal Marine operations in Sierra Leone and Afghanistan as a field medic. He even took to the skies with 771 Naval Air Squadron Search and Rescue flight, where he was half-drowned by over-enthusiastic winch operators more times than he can count.

Tired of being a target on the battlefield (who knew a Red Cross on your uniform could attract so much attention?) and perhaps seeking a bit of quiet, Andy made the unique choice in 2005 to volunteer for submarine service. His logic? Underwater had to be safer than above it!

In 2012, Andy traded his navy uniform for civilian attire but remained close to the Navy. He’s now a Health Physicist at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment near Thurso. It’s like being back in the Navy, just with no incoming bullets or saluting.

Andy is a family man away from work, sharing his life with his wife Beth and their two sons, Dylan and Ewan. In his spare time, he allows his inner geek out to play, indulging in tinkering with electronics and breathing new life into vintage computers. It’s his way of keeping history alive, one circuit at a time.

Chairing our community council, Andy brings his military discipline, problem-solving skills, and down-to-earth humour that keeps us all grounded. His journey from the high seas and battlefields to our peaceful island community is a testament to his adaptability and commitment to service, wherever that may be.
